BMW Riders of Southern Maine April 5, 2014 club Meeting

With 25 members in attendance, President Tom Gerken brought the meeting to order for April 5, 2014.

Mark your calendars…

  • May 3, 2014 – BMWRSM monthly meeting at Fair Grounds Café, Topsham Fair Mall, Topsham, 8:30 AM
  • April 23, 2014 – Last day to pre-order “Down East Rally” shirts
  • May 16-18, 2014 – BMWRSM Annual Rally, Hermit Island Campground, Phippsburg, ME
  • May 28, 2014 – For early arrival’s & RSM members “Beemers & Brats” at Richard’s in Brunswick, ME 6:00 PM
  • May 29-31, 2014 – 42nd International BMWRA Rally, Barber Motorsports and Museum, Birmingham, Alabama.
  • June 6, 7, 8… 2014 – Black Fly Rally; Northern New England & Canada – See Fred
  • July 24-27, 2014 – 2014 International MOA Rally – St. Paul, Minnesota


  • Earlier reports of the Webmaster being on the move were greatly exaggerated.
  • 2014 BMW MOA Mileage begins April 12. Your entry must be verified/signed by either Duane S. (at Street Cycles) or Tom Gerken and postmarked no later than May 12.
  • Black Fly Rally, See Fred for information, you will need a passport. If you’re looking to have a good time and a great ride.

Secretary’s Report

  • Minutes from March’s meeting are on the web site and copies were left in the printer back at home. Motioned and seconded with a vote of approval from the membership.

Treasurer’s Report

  • Irene shared the treasures report whereupon, a motion was made, voted upon and approved by the membership
  • A donation of $50.00 was made to the VNA in remembrance of Brian Skoczenski.

Membership Report

  •  As of April 5, the club had 75 members, down 8 from last year.
  •  Reminder, membership renewal can be easily performed via the web site using PayPal.

Rally Master

  • Dave via email sent the following from an undisclosed warm & sunny location.
  • Dave estimates the rally may sell out by May 1
  • As of March 21, 96 people had registered for the rally.
    • 103 lobsters
    • 24 Vegetarian/Ham dinners
    • 18 “Wicking” rally shirts have been ordered
  • There will be shirts this year. (See the web site for the embroidered design) They will be offered in three styles; Short sleeve, Mock turtleneck and Long sleeve 100% moisture wicking polyester.
  • April 23, will be the last day to pre-order shirts for the rally.
  • Sign up lists for volunteers are now at the monthly meetings.
  • Door Prizes are still needed.
  • Thursday Night before the rally “Slice & Dice” volunteers still needed.

Ride Boss

  • Steve has gotten some good ideas for rides.
  • Watch your email for upcoming organized rides.
  • Ride leaders are needed for the Down east Rally

Old Business

  • “Why We Ride” event at Pat’s Pizza, (in the Old Port) was a nice event. Breaks up the winter, looking forward to doing it again next year.
  • Annual Swap meet – tall tales were the bulk of the transactions.

Membership Committee drive update;

  • Tom had hoped to have a mock up of the brochure or Rack Card (however, it was not ready in time).
    • Vendor #1 Pricing for a high end (includes layout & design) :
      • 1000 – $460.00
      • 1500 – $482.00
      • 2000- $515.00
    • Vendor #2 Heavier stock (paper weight), better print $300.00 for layout & design fee
      • 1000 – $299.00
      • 2500 – $389.00
  • As for a promotional give-away;
    • It was discussed the Baseball caps with the club logo for new members [50 for $750.00] were expensive.
    • Kick stand coasters with the club logo, web site, contact info [$1.50 each to produce]
    • Nealy Tire Repair Kits (self contained repair kit in a tube)to have club logo, contact info, web address [$5.20 per kit]
      • The club would have to have the labels produced. For 100 – $520.00 plus shipping.
      • (Estimate at $30.00)
      • These would be given to current as well as new members, to be used with tubeless tires, not side wall repair. (get me home repair)
      • Discussion;
      • How would they be distributed?
      • Liability for the club?
      • 75 current members would need to order 200.
  • Reviewed last month’s membership approved budget
  • A Motion was made (Shawn, 2nd Irene) to increase expenditure for club promotional materials to $1500.00 for
    • 100 tire kits
    • 100 kick stand coasters
    • The club will make the labels

New Business

  • To add content to the web site, email the Web Master (Shawn) and he will set you up. He also encourages the membership to share motorcycle related information about the rally on face book.
  • Tom will contact and inquire if with advanced planning, the weekend ride to Bar Harbor hosted at the home of a former club member can happen sometime this riding season.
  • Suggestions as to where to hold July and August monthly meetings will be taken during the May meeting.
